This collection offers two dozen essays and sketches about one of the passions of Salter's life, travel, a subject beloved by writers across the centuries. Over twenty years of skiing, hiking, climbing from Colorado to Japan to the Tyrol, from Austria and Switzerland to Germany and France, Salter is an engaging companion sharing his great enthusiasm and adventures.

James Salter's novels and volumes of memoir have been widely celebrated and he is now recognized as one of America's most important writers. Susan Sontag once remarked, "[Salter] is among the very few North American writers all of whose work I want to read, whose as yet unpublished books I wait for impatiently."

There and Then The Travel Writing of James Salter (Audible Audio Edition) James Salter Mark Boyett Audible Studios Books

At first you say, a travel book by Salter, the dean of American writers today? Must be like his food book LIFE IS MEALS which he wrote with his wife, Kay. But this book is much closer to his great personal narrative, BURNING THE DAYS. It is Jim Salter reminiscing about his life, which was full of travels anyhow from Paris to the backlots of Hollywood. And his friends and outrageous adventures, sexual and otherwise, populate THERE AND THEN in a magical way. This is more of the unvarnished Salter or Salter as he wishes to be seen--the one we have come to know through the body of his life's work, but without the camouflage of some of his fiction, like his latest wonderful novel, ALL THAT IS. This is Salter the giant of a writer enjoying his life and sharing it with us through the narrative of his travels. Buy this book for yourself or for your friends and family and you will thank yourself for giving you and yours the gift of the magical writing of James Salter. This is Salter the Great in motion, and owning every corner of his world, and taking you the reader with him.

There and Then The Travel Writing of James Salter (Audible Audio Edition) James Salter Mark Boyett Audible Studios Books Reviews

I think that Salter is the best.
Always enjoy Salter,s writing. Excellent.
Salter at his best...making you feel like you are there with him...enjoying places I've been but never with such observant company. Bought several for good friends.
Unexpected and lesser known classics. All you expect from Salter but with a quirky and personal voice you don't find in some of his other writing.
As an ardent admirer of James Salter I ordered this book as I was not aware that he had written any travel pieces. Not unexpectedly the book turns out to include some wonderful personal recollections of not only places - Paris, South of England, the Austrian Tyrol, ,amongst others but also his experiences in these special places. His description of learning to ski and then descents in some of the most challenging runs in St.Anton and Kitzbuhel, Austria, capture the sensation of freedom, fear and shear joy, as do the accounts of learning to climb in some of the most difficult areas of the Rockies. I have enjoyed everyting that James Salter has written and I recommend this book to all those who enjoy superb style and unusual "travel" writing. Barbara A. Denver, NY
As the Richard Ford quote on the back says, "Sentence for sentence, Salter is the master." That has been apparent since his classic novel A Sport And A Pastime was published back in 1967, one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read (and I've read thousands of them). There and Then is not your usual "Europe on a fast track and low budget" kind of thing. It is a sensuous loving evocation of the places in the world James Salter has been to and often stayed for long periods in and sometimes lived in. He moves from Europe to the American Southwest to Asia, to wherever his instincts take him, and he makes those places vivid and real. James Salter is unique -- he has not only written classic fiction, a memoir and several collections of short stories, he has also written major films (Robert Redford starred in his "Downhill Racer") and himself directed a lovely short film about the West Point football team called "Team, Team, Team." Salter is a graduate of West Point (as was his father) and served in the U.S. Air Force for 12 years, first as a bomber pilot, then for his last six years a fighter pilot, flying over 100 combat missions in the Korean War, where he was credited with shooting down a MiG-15, a fighter jet flown in that war by the North Koreans and the Chinese. How many writers of current major literary merit can you say that of?
James Salter's writing style reminds me of Ernest Hemingway's. It is tight, crisp and colorful, intense and meaningful. The 17 chapters of this book, each capable of standing alone, display Salter's ability to find essential meaning in ordinary people, events and places. Yet his prose paints such glorious and beautiful word-pictures.

The settings are from cities and places you may or may never get to see -- Paris, the Loire, Trier on the Moselle, Basel, skiing in Kitzbuhel and other famous Alpine venues, the Tyrol, Sussex in England, rural Japan, the Colorado western mountains, memories of eastern Long Island and, to set the tone of what's to come, the experience of having to declare at customs what it is, exactly, that you bring back from your travels.

But the times in which these stories are set, well, they are gone and lost forever. We can experience them now only through the recollections of those who were "there and then". And, Salter is one of the best when it comes to bringing his memories to life and making them meaningful for us now.
